How many Thursdays until Christmas?
The number above shows how many Thursdays until Christmas 2026. From late October there are nine: 29 October, then 5, 12, 19 and 26 November, and 3, 10, 17 and 24 December.
Two of them are big days. The fourth Thursday of November is US Thanksgiving, and in 2026 the very last Thursday is Christmas Eve itself.
Thursday 26 November: Thanksgiving
US Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, and in 2026 it falls on the 26th. For many American families it is the unofficial start of the Christmas season: the parade, the big meal, then Black Friday the next morning. Count down to it on the Thanksgiving countdown.
Thursday 24 December: Christmas Eve
Because Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, Christmas Eve lands on a Thursday. That means many workplaces close early on Thursday and the long weekend starts straight away. In Germany, Poland and much of Scandinavia, this Thursday evening is the main celebration, with gifts opened after dinner. See the Christmas Eve countdown and Christmas traditions around the world.
Late-night Thursday shopping
In the UK and many other places, shops stay open later on Thursdays in December. It is a handy time to shop after work without the weekend crowds. Here is a Thursday plan:
- 5 and 12 November: browse and make lists.
- 19 November: buy cards and wrapping paper.
- 3 and 10 December: main gift shopping evenings.
- 17 December: last bits and stocking fillers.
Track it all on the shopping days countdown.
Christmas Eve on a Thursday: what it means
A Thursday Christmas Eve changes the shape of the week. Many workplaces give the afternoon off, schools have usually broken up by the Friday before, and shops run shorter hours. If you travel for Christmas, Wednesday 23 December and Thursday morning are likely to be the busiest times on roads and trains, so set off early.
Thursday 17 December: the last Thursday before Christmas week
Thursday 17 December 2026 is a key date for posting: it is the last day to ship for USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, and is reported as the last 2nd Class posting date for Royal Mail. If you are sending cards or parcels, aim to have them in the post by this Thursday. Full details are on Christmas shipping deadlines 2026.
